gardner with weary heavies

5 × 5 board · 6 kinds of piece

Martin Gardner's minichess (chess on a 5x5 board, each side a rook, knight, bishop, queen and king behind five pawns, won by checkmate), in which the heavy pieces tire. A queen that moves must rest for its side's next two turns, and a rook for its side's next one; pawns, knights, bishops and kings never rest. A resting piece still stands guard: it attacks, defends, blocks and gives check, and its check must be answered, but it cannot move to follow up. So every queen move is a commitment of three turns. Strike now, and for two turns the queen is a fixed gun the other side can manoeuvre around and attack; hold it back, and it stays free to answer whatever comes. On a board this small that turns the middlegame into a question of timing: the light pieces and the king do most of the moving, and the heavies move when one move of theirs is worth the turns it costs. A pawn that promotes arrives tired, resting as the piece it became. When every legal move a side has belongs to a resting piece, as when only a resting rook can answer a check, the rest is lifted for that turn, so a side never runs out of moves for want of a rested piece.
