gardner with spies resting

5 × 5 board · 7 kinds of piece

Win by taking the other side's king in Martin Gardner's minichess (chess on a 5x5 board, each side a rook, knight, bishop, queen and king behind a row of pawns), with the middle pawn replaced by a spy: a piece that steps one square straight, never captures, and is worth what it lets its owner see. While both spies stand, play alternates as in chess, with kings taken rather than mated. Once a spy falls (after its owner's one reply, so its taker can be taken back), the game moves in rounds: the side without a spy announces its move first, and the side with one answers with that move in view; once both spies are gone, both choose in secret. Seeing first would be crushing if an attacked piece could always step away, so in the rounds the piece that made a side's move rests through that side's next move, unless it is the only piece that can move. A piece that has just captured or dodged must stand, so an announced recapture still lands. Each spy is a target as well as an eye.
