the circling queen

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

Chess, except that the queen no longer runs in straight lines. The circling queen starts as a queen does, one square in any of the eight directions, but every further square turns her an eighth of a turn the same way, clockwise or anticlockwise as she chooses: north, then north-east, then east, then south-east, and so on, a path that curls round in a small circle of up to seven squares and never comes back to where it began. She may stop anywhere along it, and like a queen she is stopped by the first piece on a square she lands on, taking it if it is an enemy's. Next to her, she moves as a queen does; two or three squares away she reaches squares no queen could, a knight's square among them, and she has lost the long straight lines a queen pins and skewers along. What that changes is where the strongest piece belongs. A queen in the corner of the board still commands a diagonal; this one, far from the action, commands almost nothing, so she has to be brought close, where her curling paths cover a cluster of squares round her and a single piece in the way bends her elsewhere. The decision the game keeps forcing is how near to bring a queen without lines, and how to keep her out of reach of the pieces she is drawn among. Everything else is chess.
