stones

8 × 8 board · 7 kinds of piece

Chess in which either player may, instead of moving a piece, place a stone on any empty square. A stone belongs to whoever placed it, never moves, is never captured and never leaves: it is a square taken out of the game for good, blocking lines for both sides. The supply is unlimited, so the choice is always available and always costs a tempo, and that is what breaks the game. A placed stone can never be undone, and there are only 32 empty squares at the start, which sixteen stones a side are enough to fill. Games end with the board packed and nobody able to move, which is a draw. A few stones each would make every placement a question of timing; an endless supply makes placing a habit, and this game is kept to show it.
