wolves

8 × 8 board · 7 kinds of piece

Chess with a third party on the board: four wolves that belong to neither player. Each walks its own five-square loop, two loops on each wing, one nearer each player, and after every move either player makes, every wolf steps to the next square and eats whatever piece stands there, whoever owns it. With five squares to a loop, a wolf is back on the same square every five moves, after White's move one time and Black's the next: its timetable can be read, but has to be counted. Only a knight can take a wolf; anything else has to go round, and no king may stand where a wolf will step next. There is no prize for taking one. The wolves are moving terrain, opening and closing the wings on a clock and eating whatever is left on the wrong square, and nearly every game ends with one still walking.
