grand

10 × 10 board · 8 kinds of piece

Grand chess, Christian Freeling's ten-by-ten game, adds two compound pieces to chess's army: the archbishop, which moves as a bishop or a knight, and the chancellor, which moves as a rook or a knight. The idea that sets it apart is in promotion. A pawn may promote on its eighth or ninth rank and must on its tenth, but only into a piece its own side has already lost, so while nothing has been lost a pawn has nothing to become, and a pawn that could not promote may not step onto the last rank at all. Promotion is tied to exchanges: trading off a rook or the queen also opens a place a pawn can fill, and a player pushing a passed pawn has to ask what has come off the board, not only how far the pawn has to go. Giving up a piece can be an investment, and declining to capture can leave an enemy pawn on its ninth rank with nothing to become and nowhere to go. There is no castling.
