8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

Chess in which a capture strengthens the piece it strikes and moves nothing. Taking a pawn turns it into a knight, a knight into a bishop, a bishop into a rook and a rook into a queen, each where it stands, while the attacker keeps the square it struck from; only a queen is actually removed. A capture therefore neither wins ground nor, short of a queen, wins material: it hands the opponent a better piece, and since the attacker never enters the square there is nothing to recapture. To get rid of anything you must push it up the ladder to a queen and strike once more, arming the opponent at every step, and striking a piece that gives check only promotes it where it stands, unless it is a queen. Very little resolves: games run long, and nearly two thirds of them are drawn.

Score 0.641 out of 1, the average of four runs, under scoring rules version 12, measured 19 October 2026. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
