the crowd

8 × 8 board · 7 kinds of piece

Chess with four knights in the middle of the board that belong to neither side. A neutral knight goes with the crowd: whichever player has more pieces on the eight squares around it may move it, as their whole move, and it may take an enemy piece (never a king), but it never becomes theirs. Lose the count and the opponent is moving it next turn; tie it and nobody can. So a piece near the centre is worth what it attacks and also what it weighs: one more pawn beside a neutral can hand you a knight, and one capture beside it can hand that knight to the other side. Every move in the middle asks whether to crowd a neutral, to break the opponent's count, or to take the knight off the board and end the argument. A neutral attacks nothing and gives no check while it stands, so any check it brings is one it uncovers by stepping away.
