gardner in rounds with a swift king

5 × 5 board · 6 kinds of piece

Win by taking the other side's king in Martin Gardner's minichess (chess on a 5x5 board, each side a rook, knight, bishop, queen and king behind five pawns), played in rounds: each round both players choose a move in secret, both are revealed, and there is no check, so a king is simply taken. In this version the king is the fastest piece on the board. When one side moves its king and the other moves anything else, the king's move is made first, as an ordinary move, and the other move is made afterwards only if it still can be. So a king that runs is never caught where it stood, because it has already gone; and a piece the king goes for can neither slip away nor strike back first, because it is taken before it moves. What a running king cannot outrun is a piece aimed at the square it runs to: that piece arrives second and takes it there. The attacker's question each round is therefore not where the king is but where it will go, and the defender's is whether to run at all. Between pieces of equal speed nothing changes: two pieces moving onto one square collide and both are removed, two pieces trying to take each other trade places, and the two kings, being equally fast, can still fall in the same round, which is a draw.

No score: too few of its runs could be scored, so it has no score rather than a low one. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
