watering hole

7 × 7 board · 4 kinds of piece

Win by getting one of your animals onto the water hole at d4, the middle square, with none of the animals that eat it beside it; both players move at once. Each round you each choose a move in secret and the two are made together, so every step is a guess about where the other side is going. White's elephants and cats face Black's dogs and rats on a 7x7 board, every animal stepping one square in any direction, and the four kinds form a chain across the two armies: elephant eats dog, dog eats cat, cat eats rat, rat eats elephant. So each of your animals hunts one enemy kind and flees the other, and no meeting is ever two of a kind: two animals stepping onto one square meet and the one that eats the other wins, while a hunter stepping onto the square its prey has just left finds it empty. Nothing guards the hole but standing beside it, and only the one kind that eats an arriving animal can stop it there, so the game is a fight for the eight squares around the hole. Every animal starts at least two steps from it, so the opening is the approach: which guard to bring up first, and whether to step beside the hole on the very square the enemy hunter may be stepping to. Lose a guard and the hole is open to the kind it was keeping out; hold back to guard it and the other side may slip through. The armies once started beside the hole, and the game was over in three or four rounds; a rank further back, there is a game before the first meeting. Almost every game is won at the hole, though eating all of the other side's animals wins too.
