watering hole by speed

7 × 7 board · 4 kinds of piece

Win by getting one of your animals onto the water hole at d4, the middle square, with none of the animals that eat it beside it; faster animals move first. Almost every game is won at the hole, though eating all of the other side's animals wins too. Each round both players choose a move in secret, then the two moves are made one after the other, the faster animal's first and the slower one on the board the first one left, if it still can be. Cats are the fastest, then rats, then dogs, then elephants. No two kinds share a speed, so two moves never collide, and who moves first is decided each round by which animals the two players chose to move; when both sides step onto the hole in one round, the faster animal gets there first and wins on the spot if nothing that eats it is beside it. White's elephants and cats face Black's dogs and rats on a 7x7 board, every animal stepping one square in any direction, and each kind eats exactly one enemy kind: elephant eats dog, dog eats cat, cat eats rat, rat eats elephant. Speed cuts across that chain. A cat is faster than the rat it hunts and a rat faster than the elephant it hunts, so those hunters catch their prey where it stands, before it can run. An elephant is slower than the dog it hunts and a dog slower than the cat, so that prey always escapes a strike by moving away, and its slow hunter catches it only when it stays put, or when it steps onto the very square the hunter was moving to, arriving first and being eaten there.
