glinski hexagonal chess

11 × 11 board · 6 kinds of piece

Władysław Gliński's hexagonal chess: chess rebuilt for a board of 91 hexagonal cells, six to a side. A rook runs along the six lines through a cell's edges, a bishop along the six diagonals between them, which keep it on a third of the board (hence three bishops a side), a queen does both, a king steps in any of those twelve directions and a knight jumps to the twelve nearest cells no line reaches. Twelve ways out of every cell make a king hard to box in, so a mating net takes more pieces to close than on a square board. A pawn promotes on reaching the far edge, the eleven cells where it has no step forward left. Three things depart from Gliński's own rules: there is no en passant, the second army is the first turned half a turn rather than mirrored, so each king faces the other queen, and stalemate is a plain draw where Gliński gave the stalemating side three quarters of a point.

Score 0.925 out of 1, the average of four runs, under scoring rules version 12, measured 19 October 2026. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
