sardines

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

Chess with every square occupied from the start: all 64 squares hold a piece, each side's 24 pawns and full set of pieces scattered at random across the board, kings included. On a full board a piece can go nowhere except onto an enemy, so the game opens as a pure exchange of blows, and nothing can move until a capture opens a square. That makes the early decisions strange ones. Every capture wins material but also leaves a hole, and a hole is a line opened for the opponent's queen, rook or bishop as much as for yours; the question on each early move is not only what to take but whose pieces the space will serve. Otherwise it is chess without castling. The position was rolled at random until neither king was in check, neither side had a mate in one, and the site's computer players found it even and playable to a finish.

Score 0.855 out of 1, the average of four runs, provisional: worked out before the latest change to how games are scored (scoring rules version 12, 31 October 2026). It will be measured again. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
