chess with galloping knights

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

A knight that keeps going when the ground is open. Each knight still makes chess's jump, over anything in its way, but it may also gallop on: jump after jump in the same direction, in a straight slanting line. A gallop has to be clear all the way. Every jump in it passes one square, the square one step along the jump's longer side, as a horse in Chinese chess is blocked, and a piece of either colour on that square stops the gallop there; so does any piece on a square the gallop lands on along the way, and an enemy piece on its last square is taken. So the knight is two pieces at once. Behind a closed pawn chain it is the familiar short-range jumper, but when the board opens up it reaches across it on angles no other piece uses, forking, pinning and giving check from far away. Shutting a gallop down takes only one piece on one square of its line, which makes every pawn move a question: open the position for your own knights, or keep it closed against your opponent's. A knight that could ride with nothing able to block it in between would take a pawn on the first move of the game; this one has to wait for the board to open. Everything else is chess.

Score 0.901 out of 1, the average of four runs, provisional: worked out before the latest change to how games are scored (scoring rules version 12, 31 October 2026). It will be measured again. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
