chess with nightriders

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

The knight here is a nightrider, a classic piece of fairy chess introduced by T. R. Dawson in 1925: it makes a knight's jump and may then keep jumping the same way, jump after jump in a straight line, stopped only by a piece on a square it would land on, which it takes if it is an enemy's. The squares it jumps over never block it. That turns chess's short-range piece into a long-range one whose lines run at angles no other piece uses: a nightrider can fork two pieces from across the board, pin a piece against its king along a line the eye does not scan, and give check from a distance. The knight's quiet manoeuvres become threats at range, so a player has to watch the odd lines as well as the files and diagonals, and a knight-shaped gap in a pawn wall is an open line. Everything else is chess.

Score 0.900 out of 1, the average of four runs, provisional: worked out before the latest change to how games are scored (scoring rules version 12, 31 October 2026). It will be measured again. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
