almost chess

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

Ralph Betza's minimal edit to chess: the queen is replaced by a chancellor, which slides like a rook and leaps like a knight. Everything else -- board, army, castling, double step, en passant -- is untouched. It exists to ask how much of chess survives changing exactly one piece.

Score 0.908 out of 1, the average of four runs, provisional: worked out before the latest change to how games are scored (scoring rules version 12, 30 October 2026). It will be measured again. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
