chess with turning pawns

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

Chess in which every pawn has a heading it can change. A pawn steps one square the way it faces, never two, and captures one square diagonally ahead of where it faces; instead of moving it may spend its move turning to face any other way. Every pawn starts facing the enemy, so the opening looks like chess's, but the pawn's oldest limitation is gone: an advance is no longer a commitment, because the pawn can turn to guard sideways or backwards, cover a hole behind it, or walk back home. That makes a pawn move cheap to undo but every turn a lost tempo, and the balance tips towards defence: games run longer than chess and more of them are drawn.

Score 0.898 out of 1, the average of four runs, provisional: worked out before the latest change to how games are scored (scoring rules version 12, 31 October 2026). It will be measured again. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
