courier

12 × 8 board · 9 kinds of piece

The medieval German enlargement of shatranj on a 12x8 board, attested from 1202 and still played in Stroebeck into the nineteenth century. It is the first game known to give a piece the unlimited diagonal slide that later became the bishop. Beside it stand the older weak pieces: an alfil that jumps two diagonally, a fers that steps one, a wazir that steps one orthogonally, and a non-royal man that moves like a king. No castling, no double step, and pawns promote only to fers.
