shatranj

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

The Persian-Arabic ancestor of chess, played from roughly the 7th century. Same board and army as chess, but the queen is a ferz that steps one square diagonally and the bishop is an alfil that jumps exactly two. Pawns never double-step and promote only to ferz; there is no castling and no en passant. Stalemating the opponent wins. People played it for eight centuries and then abandoned it as too slow.
