runners

8 × 8 board · 5 kinds of piece
  • There are no kings.
  • Win by getting your knight, or any one of your pawns, onto the far rank where nothing can take it.
  • Each side has a single knight: a fast runner and a hunted one.
  • Pawns do not promote. A pawn that lands on the far rank where it can be taken just stands there, stuck, until it is safe or captured.
  • A player with no legal move loses.

Full rules

A race with a choice of runner. Neither side has a king: the only way to win is to land a knight or a pawn on the far rank on a square no enemy piece attacks, so every other piece is there to clear a road or to guard the home rank. The knight is the quick threat, a few jumps from the back rank and impossible to block, but each side has only one, and once it is traded the race is down to the pawns. Pawns are slow and easy to stop one at a time, yet a phalanx of them can be pushed up together until one square of the back rank is left unguarded. A defender has to watch both kinds of threat at once, and an attacker has to decide which runner the position is for. Pawns do not promote, so a pawn that arrives too early is only a stuck piece in the way; and a side left with no move at all, its pieces taken or jammed, loses.
