pawnproof wormhole

5 × 5 board · 7 kinds of piece

A door across the middle of a tiny board that pieces may use and pawns may not. The board is Gardner's minichess: five by five, a king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and five pawns a side, no pawn double step. The door is a fixed pair of portals on b3 and d3: a piece other than a pawn that ends its move on one end comes out one step beyond the other, in the direction it was travelling, capturing there as usual; to a pawn both ends are blocks. Let in, a pawn stepping diagonally into an end would come out capturing, one step from promotion, on the first move: a race the first player always wins. Kept out, the door becomes a way for the bigger pieces, mostly kings and queens, to switch wings, and in the strongest computer games each side wins as often as the other.

Score 0.572 out of 1, the average of four runs, under scoring rules version 12, measured 19 October 2026. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
