brink

8 × 8 board · 6 kinds of piece

Chess in which nothing is taken where it stands. A piece that lands on an enemy shoves it one square further along its line instead of capturing it, and a piece is lost only when it is shoved off the edge of the board; the king alone still captures in the ordinary way and is never the one shoving. So the middle of the board is a refuge and the rim is a cliff: a rook in the centre fears nothing but the enemy king, while the same rook on the edge can be knocked out by a pawn. An attack becomes a plan to drive the enemy outward, and a defence is a matter of what stands behind your pieces, because a piece with a friend or an enemy directly behind it cannot be shoved at all. Pawns shove on their diagonals, a knight shoves its target one square sideways, a piece just shoved may not shove straight back on its next move, and a king that an enemy could shove is in check just as one that could be taken is, so the game is still won by checkmate. Push-instead-of-capture chess is played online; these are its rules under a name of our own.
