the golem well

8 × 8 board · 7 kinds of piece

Two golems that belong to neither player walk a ring around a stone well in the middle of the board, and every piece that stands in their way is eaten, whoever owns it. The four centre squares are stone: no piece may stand on them or slide through them, though a knight may jump them. The golems circle the twelve squares around the stone, starting on opposite sides of the ring, and each steps one square on after every move. A golem eats any pawn or piece on the square it steps to except a king: a king in its path holds it where it is, and the other golem waits behind. Only a king can take a golem. The ring runs along the third and sixth ranks and the c- and f-files, the very squares pieces develop to, so the middle of the board can only be crossed on a clock. A piece that stops on the ring is safe until a golem comes round, and the pawns of the four central files have to walk into it; the d- and e-pawns then meet the stone and go no further except by capturing. So the game keeps asking when to cross: dash between the golems, go round by the edge files, or march your king out to hold a golem still or kill it, which opens the centre to both armies and leaves your king in the open. Pawns step one square at a time, there is no castling, and the second army is the first turned half a turn, so each king faces the other's queen. Checkmate wins, and so does stripping the other side down to its king, which is how most games between the strongest computer players end. A game that reaches its move limit, or goes a hundred moves without a capture or a promotion, goes to the side with more material.

Score 0.904 out of 1, the average of four runs, under scoring rules version 12, measured 22 October 2026. The score is how interesting a game looks when the computer plays it, out of 1.
